U-turn: Species Extinction

At the end of January, the EU Commission declared that it wanted to strengthen the protection of insects.

At the end of last year, the initiative ‘Save Bees and Farmers’ had successfully collected more than one million signatures in the EU — as a result the Commission must now deal with the initiative. On January 24, various strategies were presented to reverse the massive species extinction and decline of pollinating insects in the EU. These include the New Deal for Pollinators and the revised EU Pollinator Initiative 2018; these complement the Biodiversity Strategy 2030, the ‘From Farm to Table’ strategy, and the European Green Deal. However, in an interesting interview conducted by the ‘Blooming Landscapes’ 2021 network with Josef Settele of the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, it has become clear how complex climate change, biodiversity and agriculture are interwoven and that it is not only ‘pollinators’ that need to be considered.
