The similarity in sound and etymology of the words ‘healing’ and ‘hallowing’ point to much that medicine and religion have in common.
In the last year of his life, Rudolf Steiner addressed this connection between doctor and priest, therapist and pastor. To ‘heal’ means to intervene in consciousness, and thus, according to Steiner, one places oneself directly in the spiritual world order.
During the second weekend in June, the pastoral medicine working group at the Goetheanum worked with the frequently asked question about anthroposophical medicine: “What is the significance of karma for illness?” According to the organizing circle, Steiner had grasped a ‘physiology of karma’—“in that past karma works in humans through solar activity and future karma develops in connection with the lymphatic system.” This relationship was illuminated at the meeting and made fruitful for practical work.
