Holistic Therapy

Vienna, Austria. A new study on anthroposophic medicine.

Compared to other countries, the use of complementary medicine is very popular among the Austrian population. In 2020, a survey revealed that 12% of Austrians had sought integrative medical treatment at least once in the past twelve months. In an international comparison, only China (13%), India (14%) and Switzerland (15%) were ahead of Austria in terms of use.

The results of a study conducted by the Vienna Insurance Company in 2023 also showed that homeopathy and acupuncture are used particularly frequently and are seen as effective. Around 70 percent of those who regularly used complementary medicine were satisfied with the results and saw the healing methods as a valuable addition to conventional medicine. The study also revealed that the most common areas of application for integrative medical treatments were neck and back pain, stress, and nervousness. Female patients also use the services to relieve headaches or migraines and depressive moods.

Based on the results to date, MedUni Vienna is currently conducting a further study on the status of anthroposophic medicine in Austria. The study is part of a thesis project in the elective subject ‘Complementary Medicine: Esotericism and Evidence’. The aim is to gain insights into the apparent acceptance of complementary medicine therapy methods in Austria and how their status affects everyday practice. The aim is to give students the opportunity to gain their own impression of alternative and complementary treatment options.
